God is a Black Jamaican Woman

For a while I had been wanting to put together a little writing about all of the strong women I have spent time with in my life. At a children's birthday party a couple of weeks ago, the theory, or statement that inspired the title of this blog had come up. In that same discussion; which by the way I was having between a father/daughter combo (who are white-both collar and skin, voracious readers and in-laws) it was explained to me that recent literature, fictional I presume, tried to insist as well that Jesus is or was a Norwegian. This is all besides the point; as the intention of my ranting is to acknowledge the almost idolization and/or fascination I have with a select group of black women I have met throughout my life. Confident, entertaining, determined...all words that immediately come to mind when I think of these ladies. Many or most seem to have come from some sort of hardship, or if not are too often the recipients of 'may-day' calls from their loves ones who need rescuing. Few call me Kevin; instead it's usually a pet name such as Suga, Baby, Child, Sweetness...etc. Anything but my given on paper. I also happen to really enjoy Oprah; her vision and her story...is it too cliche to automatically think of her as a default poster child without offending? In the couple of weeks that it took me to put aside a few minutes to actually type up and edit a final copy of this entry, I had a life changing encounter. I met another woman; not black, but Romanian. Not young, but 84. At the age of 20 she was sent to Auschwitz. A resilient woman who when she was 75 decided to start publishing books about her survival of the holocaust. It was an intimate gathering, she knew I was interested and intrigued. We connected. Another woman I feel had been put in my path for a reason; if not just to be inspired and learn much; to at least recognize how grateful I should always be. For everything...For everyone. I often joke with a colleague of mine who, when goes off in a tangent that she's adding to her 'Diary of an Angry Black Woman'. We all have a story and have the decision to document, share and if possible, impose. Ain't that right, Suga?
